Herman’s Recollections

A few days after his tenth birthday, Herman waited on the edge of a crosswalk for a string of traffic to pass. A sudden, strange, panicked tightening seized his heart. He blacked out as he fell into the street.

He never really woke up again. But in the lonely, shapeless place where he dwelt from then on, secret methods of writing revealed themselves. Long descriptions of the world as he remembered it became his greatest comfort.

He became old in that place, but his memories never ran out. Always there were more places, personalities, and peculiarities to recreate with words.
