A cup that is empty, yet not empty, amid papers and to-do lists littering the desk. A ring of coffee stain in the bottom. A few crumbs of scone or biscotti. A trail of small brown grounds that cling to its inside, leading up to the rim. The handle still facing the right. Cold, but always ready. Used daily. Never in the cupboard. Never in a dishwasher. A different map of stain and dregs each morning. A container, plus time. Empty, full, empty, full, empty… A life, a heart, a cup. Cold, warm, cold, warm… Its handle always pointing right.
