“I’m not getting any closer,” Jennie whined.

Her father took the pencil from her and scratched out some of the numbers, wrote others. “What if you try this?”

She frowned.

“You see?” He finished the problem for her. “See how each line adds up?”

Her small forehead wrinkled like a walnut. “I get it when you show me, but I can’t do it myself.” She pushed her chair back and stood up.

“Long multiplication’s not easy, but once you get the hang of it, it’ll be no problem. Come back, Jennie.”

“I’ll just do it tomorrow during lunch or something.”
