Cars, and other four-letter words

Then it happened, like it’d happened in other backseats of cars on countless nights, in the heat of summer with windows cracked, in spring, in winter’s chill; in the creaky beds of pickup trucks, in old hand-me-downs, in convertibles with dropped tops, in minivans, bumping car seats, bumping phonebooks, brushing aside crinkled fast food wrappers. It happened like it was happening now somewhere else across the city; another car’s windows were fogging up in an abandoned parking lot; two lonely people were gripping each other’s nakedness, crashing together gracelessly.

It was not romantic. She did not want it to be.
