Landlines by Tom Berry

Landlines are for the birds, she said.

I considered telling her not to worry, that birds were hardy creatures, being evolved from dinosaurs and all; but in the end I stayed quiet.

Her eyes were watery, but her mouth was sustaining a grand divide between her cheeks.  I focused on her cheekbones, just below the eyes, where the tension of her smile concentrated.  When a tear sailed into my field of vision I got whiplash and felt a rush of unnameable emotion.  We were sitting on the hallway floor, and I would have stayed there for eternity.  No such luck.
