Snake’s Kiss

A snake slid its head out from the cleft of the tree’s lowest branch. Brad saw it. He passed off the shudder of fear that shook his body as an effect of the cold evening.

“Come on, let’s go out under the stars,” he said.

Geena giggled and pulled him toward her instead. “Kiss me.” The snake had insinuated itself almost to her shoulder.

He could see through the snake’s slit eyes to the black rot of the earth. He could not yell; instead he leaned his head between hers and the dangling snake and felt deeply of her lips.
