The Music City Miracle by K.M. McFarland

Somewhere between the rush of
wind and patter of rain
on the windshield I know
everything around us will be
safe for the night. Only
spaced out at this distance,
over mountains to lakeshore,
will there be room for
your voice to tunnel from
under your mind into mine
and take residence. Halfway to
home I remember the empty
passenger seat, the plane ticket
printed with ease, no second
thought to the old consequences.
For the first blissful time
I am no longer worried
if you will return indifferent;
I know I will see the
same eyes that vanished yesterday.
