On Whistler’s “Arrangement in Gray and Black, No. 1”

If you had to, could you paint your mother?  Could you capture her, in all her dignity, eyes quiet, focused straight ahead?  Would you remember the patterns of wrinkles laughing across her face, the veins painting the backs of her hands?  Would you capture the smile behind her eyes?  Can you close your eyes and see it all?  Could you show it to somebody else, put down with oil on canvas? Would you paint a solemnity in shades of gray, or color her love with your fullest pallet?  Do you remember?  And even then, could you make somebody else understand?
