Night drips around the two men, then descends into darkness. They watch in silence as the last of the flames flicker out and die, as the crumbling ruins tumble inwards and lay upon the ground, collapsed awkwardly upon themselves. There is nothing left to the house but foundations, heat-blasted concrete peppered with trash and melted appliances. The eye doesn’t look, but the mind seeks out the forms: the seared shadows where nameless faces had huddled. The last of the ash flutters down and blankets the earth around them.
