The first night

It was the first night, and no one knew what to expect. Sleepaway camp had been terrifying, exciting, and a little awkward. This felt like that, but with guns, uniforms, and no parents picking you up at the end of the week.

Todd’s sheets were stiff and scratchy against his skin. No one made a sound, but they weren’t asleep. The hard moon iced in through the window.

The man in the next bunk started whimpering softly, deeply, and hopelessly. Todd reached out his hand across the chasm between their top bunks, found the man’s clammy palm, and held it.
