The Pearl in the World’s Oyster

McCarthy traced the lines on his mahogany desk. How cliched to have a mahogany desk, he thought, peering out at the sand grains shifting in the city sixty-eight stories below. He wondered how much he could sell the desk for, how much time it would buy before he’d have to fire another one.

He logged onto eBay to research what twenty square-foot desks were going for on this dilapidated market. He got distracted by a “BUY NOW” offer for a purple and green kite, and spent the rest of the afternoon in his imagination, flying it far away from here.
