Mark Twain

The sunrise mist was frigid as it swept across our boat. No movement on the lines, so before long the venerable quote surfaced.

“Well you know what Mark Twain said. ‘Coldest winter I ever spent was a summer on the Puget Sound.'”

Yes, there it was. Same thing I had heard in San Francisco. I thought it was true there too.

Every patchwork piece of our nation believes that old Mark Twain said something about them. His legend grows in the mouths of the anecdote-lovers who make locales local.

Even our soggy Puget Sound left an impression on Mark Twain.
